The current Government House, designed by architect M. Copello, was erected on the site of the gardens of the country house built in 1718 by Princess Marie de Lorraine, wife of Prince Antoine I, called “Le Désert”, where she liked to retreat from the French court.

Its construction began in 1892 and was completed on 19 June 1894, when the offices moved in. At that time, it served as both the residence of the Governor General and the seat of the Prince’s Government.

Today, the Government House is still the residence of the Minister of State – the title that replaced ‘Governor General’ – and also holds his office and those of his Cabinet, the Private Secretariat and the General Secretariat of the Government.
